PRESENTED BY OUR FRieND’S AT HUNTING AND FISHING NORTH SHORE
Fish Talk
As the days are getting shorter the snapper are starting to feed hard. The inner harbour has produced some nice snapper around the naval base and up towards the sugar works. There has been some great fishing around the inner islands with lots of Anchovy workups, especially around Kawau, the Noises and Motutapu. Lots of snapper and king fish. The area North East of Tiri, past the cable zone has also been a top spot. Bream bay has also been fishing well. Finally the deeper areas between Great Barrier and Little Barrier is also holding good quantities of snapper.
Game fishing
The yellow fin tuna has continued to be very good on the East Coast. There have been lots of reports of people catching them way into the Gulf from the Bream Bay all the way to the Noises. Marlin fishing on the east coast has slowed down although there are still a few being caught. I was travelling back from fishing the Wanganellas last week and we trolled along the East coast . We hooked a Marlin off the bay of islands. We also marked lots of Yellow Fin Tuna off Cape Brett. I sent a friend the mark and he snagged a nice YF a couple of days later.
The West coast has been unreal this year with record numbers of tuna and marlin being caught from the Kaipara all the way down to the south island, a truly remarkable season on that side. The guys have been reporting that the number of Marlin being dropped has been significantly more than usual. I witnessed this myself on a mates boat where we dropped 6 fish one after another. I had to change out the heavy gauge hooks and swap to light gauge to catch one. They just seemed so precious on the bite.
Its broadbill season and there have been some really good fish caught already some over 300kg. If you want to learn how to catch these please come and see us.
