PRESENTED BY OUR FRieND’S AT HUNTING AND FISHING NORTH SHORE

As water temperatures heat up, so does the fishing. Workup activity is in full strength particularly in the morning, and you don’t have to travel so far to find them. Whangaparaoa Bay is a hotspot at this time of year. Work the bait schools with any hard bodied lures in 35m of water between Tiri and Kawau/Flat Rock and you are sure to find some fat healthy snapper alongside plenty of kahawai and the odd kingfish. Jigs in all their guises will work, you just have to get them to the bottom and hang on!

Work ups are also going strong further up into the Firth behind Ponui and across to the Happy Jacks. If you are heading further afield, you’ll be sure to run into more work up activity between Anchorite and Horn Rocks. Its on the outer reefs like Horn where you are more likely to encounter the bigger specimens at this time of year. Soft plastic lures with accurately set drags on quality spin reels are the most effective lures for targeting these bigger fish. Don’t compromise on your equipment as these fish of a lifetime will destroy you on weak gear.

Big snapper are re known to come in close during spring and if you really want to target these larger fish then be prepared to get in close and work the wash and edges around islands. Anchoring up and running a berley trail along the face of an island or reef will likely bring bigger fish in to feed on any well presented, stray lined bait. Fish bigger circle hooks with as little weigh as possible and 60-80lb traces for best results, and don’t be afraid to use a large bait. Big snapper will hover them.

Early season gamefish have already started to turn up with a number of yellowfin tuna being caught out behind Great Barrier and all up the East Coast for that matter. We shouldn’t be surprised as it’s always around this time of year that the gamefish start to show, but it is exciting when it happens.

Come and see us if you are new to game fishing as it’s the one form of fishing that tests gear to the limits and you simply cannot afford all the time and effort to have gear failing on you. We’ll set you up with the right kit and show you how to use it.
