Mimiwhangata – Whangaroa
We are still heading North, last month our last stop was Tutukaka ..
Watch out for Elizabeth Reef as you head north, you can go both sides of it.
1st Stop, Mimiwhangata Bay a further 12nm to the north a very cool hideaway
Sandy bottom affording shelter from the E-SE through to the W
2nd Stop, Whangaruru Harbour / Puriri Bay, just another 6nm north
If the breeze swings N then it’s a small hop into Whangaruru to get out of the wind and any swell, very good muddy anchorage. A must stop is Bland Bay on the seaward side with just a few bricks to keep an eye on.
3rd Stop, Whangamumu Harbour, 12nm from the last stop and 107nm from Auckland
This is a must do and is often the choice of overnighting before hitting the Bay of Islands, a very protected harbour that just seems to keep on going once you head in. Excellent sandy anchorage that affords good protection from the N through W, S to the E. Nice to go ashore to check out the old whaling station.
4th Stop, The Cavalli Islands, only 22nm from Cape Brett
The Cavalli’s are well worth a few days exploring the crystal clear water, great diving, big crays and awesome Snapper and Kingfish. Good anchorages on the Cavalli’s are in Waiiti Bay, Papatara Bay (Horse Shoe Bay), typically a sandy bottom with good holding.
If no swell from the NE then Te Ngaere Bay is a nice stop off on your way into Mahinepua Bay for the night which is protected from the westerlies.
5th Stop, Whangaihe Bay (3nm south of Whangaroa)
Now this is a very cool stop off with good protection and usually nobody else, till now…
6th Stop, Whangaroa Harbour, home to the Riviera Invitational 2024 (146nm from Auckland) – and oh what an amazing time it was this year…. come and join us next year for this amazing event.
Whangaroa Marina is home to the famous Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club and offers, berthage and fuel. Anchorages – an awesome safe harbour with safe anchorages in all directions. Breathtaking scenery!
